This means degrees and credits earned at ITT Tech may not find wide acceptance.

The criminal justice degree program offered by ITT Tech is pretty expensive and it may not be for you if you are in need of a high paying job immediately after completing your criminal justice program. The Western Governor's University, an online institution, wants to be able to churn out teachers for Utah schools.

But a committee set up to advise college and public school leaders on such matters is not yet sold on the idea.

The Educator Development Advisory Committee believes the WGU proposals, which would allow students to earn teaching endorsements and some teaching-related bachelor's and master's degrees, wouldn't comply with standards set up by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Partly, it is concerned about the online university's lack of face- to-face practice and coaching needed to build skills for the classroom.

But WGU President Bob Mendenhall believes his institution meets such requirements -- and then some -- through internships and its curriculum. The program has been endorsed by U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige, and its competencies developed from a database of standards from 23 states and national licensing exams.

At WGU, however, students demonstrate competency in what they've learned rather than how many hours they've sat through class. If they don't have the competency, they won't get a diploma, Mendenhall said.

The issue came to the State Board of Education Friday. The board must give approval to an education college program or graduates will not be able to receive state teaching licenses.

"I see great potential for these proposals," associate state superintendent Ray Timothy told board members. "At the same time, I feel there are some questions that have not yet been resolved."

The state school board wants the advisory committee to again meet with WGU officials, then offer a recommendation.

The board could vote on the matter as early as August.

It's often said that pupils learn the most from what their teachers do, rather than what they say. Here are eleven good practices you need to adopt if you want your kids to lean good habits rather than bad.

Ensure that computers and software are set up and working properly before the lesson.

Observe health and safety regulations and common-sense rules, such as not eating or drinking at the computer.

Observe the correct procedures for using the equipment, such as by shutting down properly rather than simply switching the computer off.

Save your files in folders on the hard disk or on the network with meaningful names, not Doc1, Doc2, or Joan1, Joan2 etc -- in fact, you should have a system for naming your files.

Organise your computer workspace well.

Save your work frequently.

Use the correct terminology, and not confuse "memory", say, with "hard disk space".

Back up your work regularly.

Use ICT to produce signs for displays.

Use computers for administrative tasks, such as producing lists of pupils, producing quality worksheets, communicating with other schools, exchanging data with examination boards and so on.

Use ICT overtly for real tasks, such as giving each pupil a sticky label with his/her name and class on, obviously mail-merged.

As you can see, none of this is rocket science -- or even complicated. Makes a big difference, though, especially when carried out day in and day out, week in, week out.

Taking distance education courses requires more motivation and self discipline than traditional college classes. Being able to work at your own pace can result in you falling behind on your work, if you’re not self directed. Organization is the most important factor for success in online studies.

Attend the orientation and any study sessions offered by the university, if at all possible. Instructors offer valuable information in these sessions. Utilize on campus resources such as the college library and computer lab. Many schools offer online resources, such as online libraries and tutoring for distance learning students. Take advantage of all resources your school has to offer to get the most out of your education.

Create a schedule with regular times for studying and stick to your schedule. If you are taking more than one class, get a large calendar. Listing all exam and assignment due dates on this calendar makes a great visual aid to help with time management. You can schedule how much time you will spend on each class based on this information. If you have a large paper due this week in one class and an exam next week in another, you can schedule your study time accordingly.

Jump right in and get started on the material. Many successful students get the books early and read the first few chapters before the class starts. If you can get a copy of the class syllabus early, do the first week’s work before the class starts. You will be a week ahead of the game when class starts. Try to stay at least a week ahead, whenever possible. Being ahead gives you flexibility if something comes up during the semester to take you away from your work for a few days. If you can’t get the syllabus, read a few chapters to familiarize yourself with the material.

Interact often with your instructor to get the most from the course. You can request that the instructor look at your schedule and give you feedback on your progress in the class. Schedule time to participate in online discussions or group projects your program offers. Some instructors require you to post replies on a message board as part of the course. You will be given points for this participation.

As you work your way through the course, follow the syllabus and study guide carefully. Complete all reading assignments and take complete notes on the material you read. Read each chapter when it is assigned. Don’t skip the reading and try to catch up before the exam. Reading six chapters two days before the test will result in a lower grade. The same goes for studying. Don’t try to study the night before an exam. Study and read a little bit each day for the best retention.

To do well in distance education courses, you must complete all assignments on time. If you have a hectic schedule, try to complete all papers and assignments early. You won’t have to worry about something coming up the night before an assignment is due. Working late or having a sick child can throw you off schedule and cause your assignments to be late. Some instructors will give partial credit for late work, while others will give no credit. No instructors give full credit for late work in college.

Is It Better Teaching In A Private Or A Public School?

The Issue

Who has the better deal? A private school or a public school teacher? Let's consider the following:

facilities
class size
salaries
budgets
administrative support

Facilities
Some public school facilities are impressive; others mediocre. The same is true of private schools. In the public school system, the twin engines of political support and economic revenue base are critical. In private schools the ability to attract endowments and other forms of financial support are just as critical. Private school facilities reflect the success of the school's development team and that of the school to continue to generate alumni support.

Class Size
Based solely on anecdotal evidence, I would say that the private schools win out on this issue. Why? Because they are by charter organized to provide a more personal kind of education for their clientele. They are selective by design. Class sizes of 10-12 are the rule. Public systems have to take almost anyone who lives within their boundaries. In public schools you will generally find much higher class sizes, apparently as high as 35-40 students in some inner city schools. (We shall overlook the small classes commonly found in rural public schools.) Unfortunately, teaching rapidly degenerates into babysitting when classes get too large.

Salaries
Again, the evidence is anecdotal but the overall impression I have is that public schools salaries are generally higher, most probably as a result of unionization. Most private school faculty are not unionized. One private school benefit is that most boarding school faculty receive some form of housing and meals. This makes quite a difference especially if you are housing and feeding a family. I know that teacher pensions in the public sector are excellent. I suspect that private school teachers' pensions differ widely according to the resources of the institution. A friend of mine in Ontario, Canada was telling me recently of the excellent salaries and retirement benefits which exist in that province. The downside to that is that there is a glut of teachers pretty much throughout Canada, as young people have trained themselves for what has become a well-paid profession.

Budgets
Since local property taxes support the bulk of public education, the annual school budget exercise is a serious fiscal and political business. In poor communities or communities which have many voters living on fixed incomes, there is precious little room to respond to budget requests within the framework of projected tax revenue. Grants from foundations and the business community are essential to creative funding. Private schools on the other hand can raise tuition, and they also can raise significant amounts of money from a variety of development activities, including annual appeals, cultivation of alumni and alumnae, and solicitation of grants from foundations and corporations. The strong allegiance to private schools by their alumni makes the chances of fund-raising success a real possibility in most cases.

Administrative Support
The bigger the bureaucracy, the harder it is to get decisions made at all, much less quickly. So, private schools, which have a lean management structure, come out ahead in this regard. I have included this category, because it is one of those commonly overlooked factors in teaching job satisfaction. Let's face it, if you know something can be improved or changed for the better, but cannot get the support to institute that change, frustration quickly sets in.
